Taken from HRVoice.org I found this article a friend posted on LinkedIn to be very accurate. This relates well to my position in the office I work in. I feel much more part of the team when I can be creative and put my stamp on things. When there is a failure to develop skills or keep commitments there is a definite lack of loyalty and employees feeling like they should stick it out.

Here is a snippet of the article witht the top 10 reasons. The rest of the article explains them well. I suggest you read the rest here

1. You Failed To Unleash Their Passions: Smart companies align employee passions with corporate pursuits. Human nature makes it very difficult to walk away from areas of passion. Fail to understand this and you’ll unknowingly be encouraging employees to seek their passions elsewhere.

2. You Failed To Challenge Their Intellect: Smart people don’t like to live in a dimly lit world of boredom. If you don’t challenge people’s minds, they’ll leave you for someone/someplace that will.

3. You Failed To Engage Their Creativity: Great talent is wired to improve, enhance, and add value. They are built to change and innovate. They NEED to contribute by putting their fingerprints on design. Smart leaders don’t place people in boxes – they free them from boxes. What’s the use in having a racehorse if you don’t let them run?

4. You Failed To Develop Their Skills: Leadership isn’t a destination – it’s a continuum. No matter how smart or talented a person is, there’s always room for growth, development, and continued maturation. If you place restrictions on a person’s ability to grow, they’ll leave you for someone who won’t.

5. You Failed To Give Them A Voice: Talented people have good thoughts, ideas, insights, and observations. If you don’t listen to them, I can guarantee you someone else will.

6. You Failed To Care: Sure, people come to work for a paycheck, but that’s not the only reason. In fact, many studies show it’s not even the most important reason. If you fail to care about people at a human level, at an emotional level, they’ll eventually leave you regardless of how much you pay them.

7. You Failed to Lead: Businesses don’t fail, products don’t fail, projects don’t fail, and teams don’t fail – leaders fail. The best testament to the value of leadership is what happens in its absence – very little. If you fail to lead, your talent will seek leadership elsewhere.

8. You Failed To Recognize Their Contributions: The best leaders don’t take credit – they give it. Failing to recognize the contributions of others is not only arrogant and disingenuous, but it’s as also just as good as asking them to leave.

9. You Failed To Increase Their Responsibility: You cannot confine talent – try to do so and you’ll either devolve into mediocrity, or force your talent seek more fertile ground. People will gladly accept a huge workload as long as an increase in responsibility comes along with the performance and execution of said workload.

10. You Failed To Keep Your Commitments: Promises made are worthless, but promises kept are invaluable. If you break trust with those you lead you will pay a very steep price. Leaders not accountable to their people, will eventually be held accountable by their people.

When did people forget how to use their signal when driving? I can’t believe how many people I have almost run into because they turn without a signal on or cut in front of me while changing lanes. Unbelievable. Bad drivers are everywhere but the last couple months have been terrible. Be safe. Use you signal.

Don’t even get me started on stop signs. I can count on one hand how many people have made complete stops around my neighbourhood in the past month or so. People roll right through. I have made it a point of priority to stop completely at stop signs as there are plenty of children and young parents in the area. Unreal.

When did people forget to actually listen? I mean actually listen? You ask someone how they are on the phone and they either don’t respond or respond with an answer that is not even a response to the original question! I get it. People are in a hurry and they hear the same questions everyday. I think it’s about time that folks slow down a bit to focus on the relationship they have with someone. Even if it’s a complete stranger. For those 5 seconds you interact with that person, that is the relationship you have at that moment. Make it a relationship where the conversation at least makes sense.

When did people get so mean? If the internet is any indication of how people actually are or what they are thinking, I am terrible concerned with people’s state of mind. I’m generalizing but people can be incredible rude when commenting on something that someone else has created. Amazing how ruthless some can be. Keyboard warriors are something I cannot stand. I have no issue if a keyboard warrior has the courage to disrespect someone to their face as long as they are able to handle to consequences. The internet has created a society that gets away with far too much. People can say what they want, when they want, to whomever they want. If they only had to do it in person, I believe many would think twice.

Moral of the story is this:

1. Drive at least somewhat like you care about those around you

2. Listen to others. And I mean really listen.

3. Stop being mean. If you can’t say it to someone’s face and take the consequences don’t write it on the internet.

End of rant.

I keep seeing Facebook updates and Tweets about people either supporting gay marriage or supporting equal rights or this and that. It shocks me a little that people are posting these things but I guess it’s not a big surprise. What’s most shocking is when I see the opposite types of things posted as found on Buzzfeed with their story here.

What is shocking most of all is that people fail to see the point.

The laws and regulations that govern people should not be made for those in power. They should not even be made for the majority of people. They should be made for every single human being ever to exist. Those laws and regulations should evolve as the people do. Staying steadfast on laws because old white men 250 years ago said so is by far the worst idea for a society. How does that progress a people? How does that dictate what is happening now in the world? 250 years is a long time. Hell, 50 years is a long time. People need to give their heads a shake and wake up to the realities of what is happening in the world now and tomorrow. They need to remember the past but not dictate the future by holding on to the it as if it is a doctrine to live by. It’s not. Like people and societies, laws and regulations need to evolve to meet the people they serve.

Let’s get this clear. I do not support gay rights. I do not support straight rights. I do not support women’s rights. I do not support men’s rights.

I support human rights.

I support human rights and all that entails. Period.

I fell off the rails. Not sure what happened there but it was not good. Lost my focus. Lost my drive that I had the first 3 days. Motivation is hard to come by but I’m determined to start the program over and dedicate myself to the 12 weeks.

One positive is that I’m eating a bit better. I’ve definitely improved in that regard. Smoothies and veggies have been staples in my diet more and more. Another positive is that I’ve slowly reduced my portion size. My biggest problem has always been eating to the point where my stomach hurts. I’m trying to change decades of eating myself until moving is difficult.

There are challenges ahead and there always will be. Staying positive is what I need. I need that positive reinforcement and motivation to keep me going. There are great communities out there for support and I will continue to lean on them to get me through.
